Edgar J Kaufmann House The Desert House Neutra Institute for Survival Through Design

kaufmann desert house

In 1945, Kaufmann acquired a large 200' x 300' (2.6 acre) site that was isolated near the foot of Mt. San Jacinto and studded with rugged desert landscape. His desert house was not designed to blend into the site in the Wrightian style; rather it was to be an object in space in the classical fashion of the European villa. Originally priced as $30,000, (the 3,800 sq. ft. home ultimately cost $300,000) the house turned out to be simple -- and simply expensive. Rectangular in plan, its form was essentially a glass pavilion with planar walls that extended into the site via two axes one north-south -- the other east-west.

Homeless encampments are on the ballot in Arizona. Could California, other states follow?

The Kaufmanns used the house mainly as their winter residence, relocating to Palm Springs during the colder months. After 1964 two subsequent owners altered the house, increasing the square footage from approximately 3,200 square feet to just over 5,100 square feet, which compromised the original design. In 1993, the house’s current owner hired Los Angeles architectural firm Marmol and Radziner to return the house to its original state by relying on many painstakingly researched original materials and production processes. The Kaufmann House achieved iconic status through its architectural innovation and the lens of Julius Shulman, one of the most influential architectural photographers of the 20th century. Shulman’s photographs of the house, particularly the striking image taken at twilight with the interior lit and the pool reflecting the house and sky, have become defining images of modernist architecture.

Three cities offer hope on California’s homelessness crisis

Major outdoor rooms are enclosed by a row of movable vertical fins that offer flexible protection against sandstorms and intense heat. Located at 470 West Vista Chino in Palm Springs, California, this masterpiece of architecture was designed to connect residents and visitors to the beautiful surrounding desert, letting the outside in and vice versa. The two-story, five-bedroom, five-bathroom, home was built in a pinwheel design with low horizontal planes that bring the house closer to the desert landscape, giving the illusion that it is floating amongst the mountains. This illusion is emphasized by the use of sliding glass doors that open up to the walkways and patios. The effect the glass doors give to the Kaufman House is that when they are opened, the interior and exterior become a singular flowing space. The Desert House stands in the northern part of Palm Springs, where the lower slopes of Mount Jacinto meet the plain of the Coachella Valley.

Kaufmann House; Richard Neutra's Iconic Palm Springs Desert Modern Design

Neutra created another outdoor seating area by placing a lookout pavilion above the living area of the otherwise one-story building. The pavilion’s western and northern sides are lined with the same aluminum louvers as used below, while the other two sides are left open. Neutra named this elevated room a “gloriette,” a northern European Baroque term that denotes an elevated pavilion offering views of a garden or a landscape. The house was originally captured in the black-and white images of american architectural photographer julius shulman. In 1970, slim aarons chose it as the setting for his iconic photograph ‘poolside gossip’, depicting california society women by the pool. Regarded among the most important houses of the 20th century, the kaufmann house is currently up for sale via gerard bisignano of vista sotheby’s international realty for $25m.

Art and design exhibitions

Modernist architect richard neutra built the five-bedroom house in 1946 as a retreat for harsh winters, with an emphasis on the connection to the surrounding desert landscape. Large sliding glass walls open rooms up to a series of terraces, the iconic pool and garden, paving the way for california’s concept of ‘indoor outdoor’ living. After kauffman, its original owner, died in 1955, the house stood vacant for several years, while it was restored in the 1990s by award-winning firm marmol radziner, who returned the residence to its initial form, size, and aesthetic integrity.

It wasn’t until 1993, when Brent and Beth Harris, a financial executive and an architectural historian, moved in that there was an attempt to bring the Neutra house back to its original splendor piece by piece. The result is a striking, sculptural layout resembling a pinwheel with various wings radiating from the central living and dining room. Throughout, there is a strong connection between the indoors and outdoors, reinforced through large swaths of glazing and shade-inducing vertical aluminum louvers that are also one of the home’s highlights. Richard Neutra, a Vienna-born architect, brought a unique blend of European modernism and Californian innovation to his projects.

In California’s Carmel Valley, a Picturesque Retreat Lists for $11 Million

Following the end of World War II, he was commissioned for the Kaufmann house, and it later became a beloved piece of the renowned International Style architecture he was known for. The variety of spaces, ranging from enclosed to semi-enclosed to open, transcends any traditional distinction between indoors and outdoors in favor of a continuous, human-made environment. Moreover, the new environment was designed so that its occupants could fine-tune its features for physical comfort, most notably the radiant heating and cooling systems for the concrete surfaces of the outside terraces. Lastly, within the hostile desert surroundings the new environment was to be a safe one as exemplified by the mirrors Neutra installed in unexpected places, which allowed the inhabitants to scan their immediate surroundings. Neutra used as basic materials stone, glass and steel, and tended not to depart from the range of colors than the desert offered, so that the house does not desentonase of their natural environment.

Richard Neutra's Kaufmann House epitomises desert modernism in Palm Springs

The house’s swimming pool is one of the most iconic and recognizable aspects of the Kaufmann House; however, it is not solely a photographic gem or simply a recreational feature. The swimming pool creates a compositional balance of the overall design of the house. The house alone is unbalanced and heavy as the wings are not equally proportioned, but with the addition and placement of the swimming pool there is a cohesive balance and harmony throughout the design.

To continue their efforts of preservation, they decided to put the house for auction at Christie's auction for high profile, contemporary, art. They believed that only serious buyers interested in continuing the preservation of this historical site would purchase the house at an auction. The house sold at auction for 19.1 million dollars by an anonymous buyer but later fell out of escrow. Unfortunately, only glimpses of it can be seen from the street including its famous ‘gloriette’ roof deck. In the north wing another corridor opens along an outside patio that leads to two other rooms.

After having been significantly amended by its successive owners, current owners of the residence decided to return it to its original state. The architects removed the areas added and restored the house based on the famous photographs Julius Shulman did of the house in 1947. The architects decided to also return to the desert garden look it had in times of Neutra. In addition, they incorporated a discrete heating, air conditioning and ventilation system, and a new pavilion at the pool, known as the Harris Poll House. A double cantilever allows the absence of a corner post in the master bedroom (where the glass doors meet at a 90-degree angle) giving a powerful illusion of a floating roof. The extensive south-facing glass walls had to be covered with an inelegant system of exterior canvas drapes.

The architect championed the importance of “ready-for-anything” designs that could have open, multi-use spaces, and coined on this subject the concept “The Changing House” for an article he wrote in 1947 for the Los Angeles Times newspaper. Kaufmann passed away in 1955 and the Kaufmann House was left abandoned for several years. It then went through a series of several owners including famed singer Barry Manilow and Eugene V. Klein, who was the owner of the San Diego Chargers. During this time, it also underwent various interior and architectural changes without any thought of preservation from any of the ensuing owners. The roof was altered to add air-conditioning, wallpaper was put up in the bedrooms, and a wall was torn down in the living room to add additional living space. Following its stint with Hollywood’s best, it was again left vacant for several more years.

A combined living and dining space, roughly square, lies at the center of the house. While the house favors an east-west axis, four long perpendicular wings extend in each cardinal direction from the living areas. Thoughtful placement of larger rooms at the end of each wing helps define adjacent outdoor rooms, with circulation occurring both indoors and out.

Even before my first visit to Palm Springs, the building I most wanted to see was Richard Neutra's Edgar Kaufmann Residence. I knew the 1947 photos of the house by architectural photographer Julius Shulman which are among most famous and widely known architectural images of all time. Architectural historian John Crosse assembled an 82-page bibliography citing over 150 published articles on the house (most accompanied by Shulman photos) beginning with the house's completion through Neutra's death in 1970. But the house settled into obscurity with only 70 articles published about it after 1970 until the house was purchased and restored by Beth and Brent Harris in 1993. Since their restoration of the house (completed in 1995) there have been close to 275 articles about the Harris' efforts and those of their architects, Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner.

To the west, a kitchen, service spaces, and staff quarters are reached by a covered breezeway. In the northern wing, another open walkway passes along an exterior patio, leading to two guest rooms. From the street, the house looks beautifully layered with floating planes that rise in elevation as you move west. Wanting to capture more views at a higher elevation, Neutra designed the gloriette as an open-air perch on top of the house, covered by a roof and shading devices on two sides.

Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House in Palm Springs was designed and built in 1946–1947, although some sources claim that the preparatory contact between client and architect occurred in 1945. The house exemplifies Neutra’s approach to designing a house and its surroundings as a single, continuous environment, a concept he had begun to work with in the early 1940s. Other examples are Neutra’s Nesbitt House (1942, Los Angeles) and the Tremaine House (1945–1948, Montecito). The Kaufmann House is an early example, and one of the clearest, of a post–World War II southern Californian modernism that closely integrates the building with its environment. For Neutra, however, the house also symbolized a universal type of dwelling for difficult-to-settle environments. The south wing comprises two covered walkways separated by a massive stone wall, while another open path leads north past a patio to a pair of guest bedrooms.

That’s why the Desert House, built in 1946 by Austrian-born architect Richard Neutra for retail tycoon Edgar J. Kaufmann, stands out all the more. Fusing glass, steel, and stone, "it is an architectural marvel that helped define the modernist aesthetic," says Gerard Bisignano, partner at Vista Sotheby’s International Realty, who is handling the sale of the 3,162-square-foot home. A symphony of steel, glass, sandstone and stucco, it exemplifies California living with terrazzo flooring, mountain views and the famed central swimming pool.

Much was made of Neutra's skirting of local ordinances that prohibited second stories, but similar upper-level sleeping porches were commonplace in the desert. They were often included in early Spanish-style homes that, in pre-air conditioning days, had sleeping porches (or gloriettes) that caught the evening breeze and allowed locals to sleep outdoors during the hottest summer months. The origins of the house are familiar to architecture fans because of the pedigree of its owner, Edgar Kaufmann, the Pittsburg department store magnate. Kaufmann meant no disrespect to Wright, but he sought a home more open and airy than anything in Wright's vocabulary.

kaufmann desert house

Completed in 1946, the Kaufmann Desert House was an instant sensation, and soon the five-bedroom, five-bathroom vacation house became an important catalyst that kick started the post war surge of Modernist architecture in and around Palm Springs. Inside the home, the main floor layout is centered around a living and dining room with its floor-to-ceiling windows and brick-fronted fireplace. The master suite, additional bedrooms and service wing are along adjoining corridors or covered walkways. After Kaufmann's death in 1955, the property cycled through a number of high-profile owners, including Barry Manilow and former San Diego Chargers owner Eugene Klein.

Three cities offer hope on California’s homelessness crisis

An extreme privacy is guaranteed both to the hosts, as the children, guests, and servants. The only coexistence between them occurs in the shaded walkways, terraces and courtyards. Blinds that flank a long dark pool connect the guest wing with the rest of the house. The lounge area, shared with the dining room and more or less square, is at the center of the house. The plan in the form of cross guarantees that the four wings get both daylight and good ventilation. The large sliding windows, whose bronze-colored blinds alleviated the silvery glow of the house, lead to an open, adjacent courtyard in the living room and in the master bedroom, open to the pool.

The Kaufmann Desert House by Richard Neutra

When the Harrises decided to end their marriage, they faced a dilemma regarding the disposition of the house. Both were clear that the house required a special buyer who would fully appreciate its cultural significance and provide the kind of maintenance such a property requires. They hit upon a seemingly perfect solution -- they offered the house at auction as a piece of art. A precedent had already been set with the 2003 Sotheby's auction of Mies van der Rohe's innovative Farnsworth house which sold for $7.5 million. The Harrises went with Christies who put a pre-auction estimate for the house at $15-25 Million.

The Hidden History of the Kaufmann House

However, while still an enthusiast of Wright’s work, Edgar wanted a lighter feeling than their Fallingwater home and felt Neutra could deliver. A decade earlier he employed well-known architect Frank Lloyd Wright to build his Pittsburgh home known as Fallingwater. At its eastern end, the narrow strips are continuing a stretch, so that the excess rainwater can flow to the east and dropped onto the rocks. The gargoyles are an architectural element known in Japanese gardens as in medieval cathedrals. Neutra and the modernization became a “leap of water” that is a tribute to the distant Falling Water House Bear Run. Although one wing of the house sits on an east-west axis, the other sits perpendicular or to the cardinal directions to expand the areas of residence.

The gloriette, a serene outdoor room above the house, was Richard Neutra’s creative way of bypassing zoning codes that forbade two-story structures.

The war moratoriums were slowly lifted as World War II ended, but relatively strict building regulations remained enforced. However, Neutra was able to find his way around the restrictions by breaking ground on the foundation a few days before the official enforcement. The project resulted in a total cost of nearly $300,000, surpassing the current single-family residence average of $40,000. Neutra’s work is notable for its ability to blur the boundary between inside and outside. In the Kaufmann House, this is done with walls that run from the interior to the exterior clad in the same stone material.

The way in which Neutra designed the Kaufmann House was such that when the sliding glass doors were opened the differentiation of interior and exterior was blurred as if it was a sinuous space. The Harrises purchased the home for US$1.5 million, then sought to restore the home to its original design. Neutra had died in 1970, and as the original plans were not available, the couple brought to Los Angeles architects Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner to restore the house.

Even designed with right angles, the forms of the house are very smooth; yet the severe winds of northeast Palm Springs still blow everything they can get a hold of, despite improvements to the walls and blinds. The Kaufmann House distills space in the silver-plated horizontal planes that rest atop transparent glass panes. The unique sharp vertical feature is the chimney located next to the “public square”, as Neutra called it.

Architects worldwide have extracted principles from this building throughout the course of history. The house still stands today and is considered one of the essential pieces of 20th-century architecture among projects such as Fallingwater, Robie House, Gropius House, and Gamble House. This allowed home inhabitants to walk from the interior to the exterior without sensing a temperature change on the floor. They would feel as though they were on the same surface even after crossing the glass line and over to the exterior hardscape slab. In 1946 Edgar Kaufmann commissioned Richard Neutra to design a winter vacation home in Palms Springs, California. A decade earlier, he hired Frank Lloyd Wright to design his renowned Fallingwater house.

Charlotte Schilling and son Owen found dead in Iowa state park 10 days after they disappeared

charlotte schilling

PLATTSMOUTH -- Residents of Plattsmouth on Monday didn’t need official word from the FBI in reflecting on the lives of Charlotte and Owen Schilling. Lindsay Schilling said her mother often surprised them with adventures like road trips and days at the zoo, but the adventures never lasted long and her mother always calls. A passer-by discovered the bodies Sunday evening in a wooded area about a quarter of a mile from a boat ramp that runs into the Missouri River near the state park. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Report: Longtime Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling moving to Tennessee

Dawson told the Omaha World-Herald that police are convinced 'a murderer is not on the loose,' adding that the mother and son were not victims of an attacker. But the Schilling always called home and the excursions never lasted long. Her family grew worried when neither she nor Owen returned home, and her cellphone went unanswered. Investigators believe they know the cause of death but still were awaiting official word from the medical examiner who performed the autopsies, said Council Bluffs, Iowa,  Police Sgt. Dave Dawson. Christian Meneses’ relationship with Owen Schilling wasn’t so much about help as it was about roughhousing. The two boys hung out every day, said Christian, 8, who lives down the street.

'I just about went to my knees,' said the family's neighbor, Naomi Raposo, 50, describing her reaction to news of the deaths. She just found out Tuesday, not realizing that earlier reports of bodies being found were about Schilling and her son. "Outside of our circle of friends, it hasn't been a real pleasant experience in Boston," Schilling told USA Today. "So we're just trying to find a place to live out our lives with happiness with people that are nice, and Tennessee is it." Plattsmouth police Sunday had yet to find a mother and son who were apparently last seen Thursday. Meyers said some of the items that were purchased at the convenience store were found partially consumed near the bodies in the woods.

The EMT president was asked to make sure everyone had a copy and signed it to ensure insurance coverage and verify city affiliation for stipend payments. Petitioners stated Schilling possibly violated HIPPA law, and fear the city will take money saved for a replacement ambulance for purposes other than EMS. Voters within the Kooskia city limits will be deciding whether to recall Mayor Charlotte Schilling in next Tuesday’s May 21 elections. Please log in, or sign up for a new account to continue reading. But the woman always called home and past excursions never lasted long. Relatives have said it wasn't unusual for Schilling to surprise her children with short road trips to parks, zoos and other nearby attractions. Nine days after the discovery of the vehicle, a passer-by found the woman and boy's bodies in thick woods about a half-mile from where the car had been parked.

Authorities had to rely on autopsy results to confirm the identities because the bodies had decomposed. Cody Johnson, a clerk at the Lake Manawa convenience store where surveillance video captured Schilling and her son shortly after she checked him out of school, was one of the last people to see them alive. The day after they disappeared, police found Schilling's vehicle at the same park where the pair would eventually be found dead. A man stumbled across the two bodies Sunday night about a half-mile from where the car had been parked. They were too decomposed for immediate identification, but the FBI said the bodies were those of an adult woman and a boy. Investigators said friends described behavior in the days before Schilling disappeared with her son that’s consistent with someone contemplating suicide.

To offer your sympathy during this difficult time, you can now have memorial trees planted in a National Forest in memory of your loved one. The identification of the bodies capped almost two weeks of searching for the mother and son, who last were seen May 10. Police found Schilling's 2010 Chevrolet Malibu on May 11 at Lake Manawa State Park south of Council Bluffs. Council Bluffs Police Sgt. Chad Meyers said Schilling actually lost consciousness during her previous suicide attempt, and a family member heard her fall. Someone was able to cut the zip tie off Schilling’s neck quickly enough for her to recover. OMAHA, Neb. — Police say a Nebraska mom who disappeared last month with her son strangled the 10-year-old boy before strangling herself in the woods of an Iowa state park.

The two families took care of each other's dogs when one family was out of town. Investigators said they believe the mother and son are still alive, and because there's nothing criminal about the case, Schilling will not be charged. Her family grew worried when neither she nor Owen returned home, and Schilling’s cellphone went unanswered.

According to Council Bluffs police, Charlotte Schilling attempted suicide by the same method in November. Friends told investigators that her recent behavior indicated actions consistent with someone contemplating suicide. Charlotte and Owen Schilling were reported missing on May 10. The two were last seen in surveillance video from a convenience store, and Charlotte Schilling's vehicle was found abandoned at Lake Manawa with her wallet and cellphone inside. The FBI has gotten involved in a search for a 41-year-old mother and her 10-year-old son who disappeared Thursday morning. The Council Bluffs and Plattsmouth police departments, along with the FBI, plan to release a joint statement in the coming days, after first sharing their findings with the family, Dawson said. Schilling loved her dogs, pugs George and Gigi, and fawned over Jillibean, the Andrewses' Weimaraner.

Officials said the bodies were not dumped into the lake, and they're not releasing any information as to the cause of the deaths. Meneses and her family moved to Plattsmouth about two years ago, just blocks from the Schillings. She said Owen was a playmate to her four oldest children, ages 6 to 14. Search efforts turned up nothing until May 20, when the bodies of both the woman and the boy were found near the Missouri River, south of the lake.

The World Herald reports that police don't have evidence of any foul play, but they're treating the case like a kidnapping. Charlotte and Owen Schilling were last seen in Plattsmouth, Neb., when Charlotte picked her son up from school, according to the Journal Star. If you’re in charge of handling the affairs for a recently deceased loved one, this guide offers a helpful checklist. A thief stole something from Charlotte Schilling's car a few years ago, but she had never been the suspect of any criminal investigation, Plattsmouth Police Chief Steve Rathman said. Neither had her husband, Carl, or their two other children, Lindsay and Tyler.

Carnival Ships by Size: Biggest to Smallest

what is the largest carnival cruise ship

However, for many years, it has held back from following rivals such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises in building ever-bigger ships. Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration are now the only Carnival ships on the list of the world's 50 biggest cruise vessels. Carnival Vista introduced entirely new cabin categories in Havana Cabanas and Family Harbor. These keycard-accessed areas of the ship not only contain swanky new types of staterooms, but dedicated spaces for occupants. Perks of family-minded Family Harbor rooms extend to a free night of babysitting and free specialty restaurant access for under-12s. Those staying in the Havana area have their own themed pool and sun deck.

The TV also allows you to watch select live channels and shipboard programming and to check your onboard bill. Suites in all three of these special accommodation types also give passengers the suite perks mentioned above. Also in the space is Emeril's Bistro 717, a New Orleans-style, for-fee eatery developed by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse. Here's the rundown on what you can expect on board so you can determine if Carnival Jubilee is right for your next sailing.

Fantasy Class

The smallest Carnival cruise ship is Carnival Elation, the line's second-oldest vessel. At 71,909 gross tons, it carries just 2,190 passengers — less than half the amount accommodated on ships in Carnival's Excel class. Mardi Gras is Carnival Cruise Line’s largest ship ever at 180,000 gross tons. The ship is Carnival’s most innovate vessel to date and is the first cruise ship in North America to be powered by LNG. The ships have relatively fewer amenities and venues than the newer and bigger Carnival ships. You won't find giant water parks on these vessels as you would on newer Carnival ships.

The Different Classes Of Carnival Ships (Biggest To Smallest)

These are the ships that sail in places such as Alaska, where even in the summer it can be too chilly for sunning on an open pool deck. At 111,000 tons, the Conquest-class ships (and Carnival Splendor, noted above) are about 20% smaller than the newer Vista-class and Dream-class ships. For starters, the Dream-class ships don't have Imax theaters or trampoline parks. They also lack exclusive, keycard-restricted cabin areas and some of the eateries found on Vista-class ships. Carnival's Dream-class ships are roughly the same size as its Vista-class ships, and the two classes have a lot in common.

Carnival Jubilee does not have a specific daytime dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, and you're bound for the top deck, T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside) are just fine. Smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is allowed but only in designated outdoor areas on Deck 8 mid-ship on the starboard side. Smoking is also allowed on the starboard side of the casino, but it's for cigarettes only. All types of smoking are forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies. The second quarter involves pool deck games where passengers have to dress up in football gear to complete team races.

The Cherry on Top candy shop is the place to go for a special sweet treat. Splendor is currently the dedicated Carnival ship Down Under, sailing from Sydney as well as Singapore. It carries 3,000-plus passengers through itineraries in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.

It houses ten restaurants, endless bars, and entertainment opportunities. Have you ever wondered which is the biggest ship in the Carnival fleet? Perhaps you want to know what the average weight of Carnival’s cruise lineup is.

A Guide to All 27 Carnival Cruise Ships

Carnival Venezia offers cruises to the Caribbean and Canada/New England from New York and Port Canaveral. Registered in Panama and with an investment of $1 billion, the Carnival Celebration epitomises fun and entertainment at sea. The ship also features delectable dining at the Seafood Shack, Shaq’s Big Chicken and Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse. Overall, Carnival Cruise Line offers a range of ship sizes to fit your preferences and needs. It’s also worth noting that Carnival is not the only cruise line out there. Royal Caribbean and Costa Cruises are two other popular cruise lines that offer a variety of ship sizes.

Carnival Conquest

Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon and Carnival Panorama also feature Italian eatery Cucina Del Capitano, as well as JiJi Asian Kitchen, while Carnival Venezia has an Italian restaurant called Il Viaggio. Instead, Carnival usually takes an incremental approach to design changes for its new classes of ships. You'll find a lot in common between the Vista class and Dream class, for instance.

We provide expert advice, insightful reviews, and comprehensive guides to help seasoned and novice cruisers create their ideal sea journeys. The vessel (named RMS Empress of Canada at the time) was built for Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd. in 1960 before being bought by the newly formed Ted Arison Carnival Cruise Line. The 180,000 gross-ton cruise ship will be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG) and is under construction at the Meyer-Werft shipyard in Germany.

The only time you might want to have some bills handy is for tipping your room steward, bartenders, room service delivery people, luggage porters or shore excursion guides. Through at least April 2026, Carnival Jubilee offers two seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries out of its Galveston home port on a regular rotation. Both types of sailings begin and end in Galveston and visit Mahogany Bay in Roatan and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico with three sea days mixed in. The only difference between the two itineraries is the order in which the port calls and sea days occur. The second new show is the "Lone Star Tailgate." Drawing on Texas' love for all things football, Carnival has created four indoor/outdoor "quarters" of fun to mimic the four quarters of a football game. When I sailed, the first quarter, which is all about pool deck games for kids, was held on one sea day, and the other three were held on another sea day.

As noted above, the line has ordered a third Excel-class ship (Carnival Jubilee) that will be ready to sail in December 2023. However, Carnival's biggest ships also sail with more passengers, which can be a turnoff if you're the kind of traveler who likes a more intimate experience. Passengers link credit cards to their onboard accounts or put up a set amount of cash to charge against, using their keycards as a means of making purchases.

It is often located at the rear of each ship, affording excellent views from the aft out to sea and offering a tranquil area to rest from the rest of the fun onboard the ship. Carnival Cruise Line has one of the biggest gaps between its youngest and oldest cruise ships. The oldest ship in the fleet (Carnival Ecstasy) entered service in 1991 and the latest ship (Marda Gras) entered service in 2021 – three entire decades later. Carnival Magic is only one year older than Carnival Breeze and was the first ship in the cruise line's fleet to include a ropes course. She has the same gross registered tonnage , as Carnival Breeze; however, she's only able to host up to 4,724 guests.

Every 100 cubic feet is equivalent to one gross registered ton. The largest active vessel in Carnival's fleet is the Carnival Celebration. However, the Celebration will soon share this title with the planned Carnival Jubilee.

From the largest, the Carnival Jubilee, to others like the Carnival Dream, size plays a key role in defining the onboard experience. Whether it’s expansive decks, a multitude of dining options, or diverse entertainment, the size of these ships caters to different tastes and needs. This guide to Carnival’s ships by size aims to help you find the right fit for your cruise adventure. With a gross tonnage of 133,500, Carnival Horizon offers a large-scale, vibrant cruising experience. Its notable features include the SkyRide, an aerial bike ride, and the IMAX theater, providing unique entertainment at sea.
